Breaking News: 5th District GOP chooses primary

By a vote of 19 in favor and 13 against, Virginia’s 5th District Republican Committee has chosen to select their 2010 Congressional candidate via a state-run primary election.
This decision likely will be controversial as six of the seven announced GOP 5th District candidates recently issued a joint statement requesting a convention rather than a primary.
Stated concerns over a 5th District GOP primary are numerous. These include a significantly higher campaign cost for participating candidates and the threat of Democrat crossover voters potentially favoring the Republican perceived as being the most liberal, in order to create or exacerbate GOP intra-party dissension.
